WHY FUTSAL?

10 reasons to play f u t s a l .

Roberto Martinez about f u t s a l .

Juninho

"Futsal was crucial in my career, to shape the kind of football player I was. This discipline does not compete with football: it is complementary. Futsal is about playing fast and one-touch football. If you look at the technical and tactical side of the game, it's a great learning experience: you have to react quickly, you're often called upon, and there are a lot of one-on-one duels. In today's football, you have less and less space, so having practised futsal is very beneficial."

"In futsal, I picked up specific technical skills. It also really improved my reaction time. In terms of footing and balance, too, futsal teaches you a lot. And most importantly, you learn to be very clinical in front of goal."

Wissam Ben Yedder

"During my childhood in Portugal, all we played was futsal," he said. The small playing area helped me improve my close control, and whenever I played futsal I felt free. If it wasn't for futsal, I wouldn't be the player I am today."

Cristiano Ronaldo

“Futsal had a massive influence on me when I was growing up. It’s a very demanding game and it really helped to develop my technique, speed of thought, and ability to perform moves in tight spaces. I think futsal is a fundamental part of a footballer’s life.”

Neymar

“When I started to train in my first football club I had really advanced fundamentals. I started by playing futsal, that in my opinion is where all players should begin, because you learn so much with reduced space, you learn to manipulate the ball, close control, interaction with other players…”

THE FA: BENEFITS OF FUTSAL

LIONEL MESSI

Lionel Messi owes plenty to Futsal in shaping his impressive career. Overcoming a growth hormone deficiency and taking the pitch for Barcelona at only 16, it was his time at Newell’s Old Boys Futsal club that gave him the “speed and relentless attacking style” that has become synonymous with his playing style. Messi himself fondly recollects his time at the Rosario based club; “as a little boy in Argentina, I played futsal on the streets and for my club…it really helped me become who I am today”.

"A lot of the moves I make originate from futsal. It's played in a very small space, and the ball control is different in futsal. And to this day my ball control is pretty similar to a futsal player's control."

Ronaldinho

"I played futsal growing up in Baurd. In futsal you need to think quick and play quick so its easier for you when you move to normal football."

Pelé

"In futsal, you see whether a player is really talented. You notice the small details in quality, class and tactical understanding."

Xavi

"When you see the skill of these players, you realise that futsal is really important. I think young players should spend more time playing futsal and developing their technique. Futsal could become a fundamental discipline in the future because it is the basis of the game. If young people spend more time, they will improve their technique."

Patrick Vieira
